What are the Display Technologies  For TVs available right now in india :-

LCD :- LCD stands for Liquid Crystal display. These Display panels use Cold Cathode Fluorescent tubes(CCFL) for back lighting. A typical LCD is no longer promoted or backed up by
TV manufacturing companies. LCD were more power consuming and it has its issues with viewing angles. We will not get into the details of the LCD as  most of the buyers in India will opt for below mentioned three technologies i.e. LED, O LED , Q LED and may be in future mLED

LED :- LED stands for  Light Emitting Diodes are essentially LCD panel backlitted from LEDs. So every LED tv should be called LED backlit LCD Tvs.  There are three types of backlight technologies used for LED i.e. Full Array Backlight , Edge Lit, and Direct Lit, although each has its lifespan but among these three Full Array Backlight should be preferred , as it has less bleeding issues, less diffusion issues  as compared to DLED and ELEDs

Full Array Backlit LEDs are considered to be best  for LED , as it support “Local Dimming “ which means certain areas of screen changes the luminosity as per need. Full Array Backlit also support colored leds instead of plain simple white ones as found in model Sony XBR series , that produces more vibrant color although difference is negligible. Full Array LEDs are placed behind the screens usually such tvs have better brightness and can handle more better HDR outputs

Edge LED or ELED are the most common type of lighting technology that is used  wherein peripherals of screen are powered with led lights the disadvantage of this is the some areas looks brighter than other areas specially in the corners. Centre areas are mostly gets affected with diffusion issues

Direct LED or DLED are also quite popular  backlight technology , it is similar to Full Array backlights but with very less in number . So some LEDs are placed behind the screen for illumination. However these dont support local dimming and sometimes show diffusion at certain areas of screen like image bleeding , color merging to others , certain areas softer than other.

QLED:- QLED stands for Quantum LED , a marketing name given by samsung for panels which advanced LEDs . What QLED panels have is a Typical LCD panel backlit by LED  and between the LCD Layer and Backlit LED , a Filter with Energy Reactive Nanoparticles , filters the light to provide more saturation and vibrant output. This filter is called Quantum Dot Filter  . Expect better colors and brightness in QLED TVs. Expect QLED to produce brightest experience and good color production. Although samsung is working towards antireflective backlit technologies as well to compete with OLED black levels but when it comes to Richness and Color Contrast OLED is best option out there in market.

OLED :- OLED stands for Organic LED. This work totally different than LED  or QLED . OLED provide individual pixel illumination . It like every pixel has own On and Off button  which result in deepest black possible in the event of off state . Better black levels provide best possible color results  and it provides the best possible TV viewing experience like the PLASMA tv used to provide back in last decade. OLED can be even more thinner than QLED.

Advantage of OLED over QLED :-  Pure blacks , zero light bleed , Better viewing angles ,Better Response times hence even more higher frame rates can be achieved with OLED , hence far higher refresh rates , least possible motion blur . Since OLED use individual pixels on and off hence less power consumption and more thinner then QLED.

Advantage of QLED over OLED :- More Brightness, Since backend technology is LED hence even greater sizes TVs can be made for QLED at affordable costs.Better brightness translates for better HDR Experience but margin from OLED is quite small but yes QLED is somewhat better in theory. Lifespan of QLED should be better as it doesn’t have any Screen burn in issues

microLED or mLED:-  Its a future technology , but not far enough for not mentioning . It will carry the best features of LED and best features of OLED , It means high brightness and wide color Gamut  from LED and Deep Blacks , Better Viewing Angles without screen burn in.

Pictures Density is most important factor in tvs  and is measured in Pixel , Pixel is made from “Picture Elements”, When a TV screen carries more than certain number of pixels  , then the screen is called High Definition or HD screen . for eg a full hd tv carried 2 million pixels. And an ultra had carries 4 times pixels that why the term 4K, i.e. 8 million pixels and hence called ultra hd

Native Resolutions of TV

HD Ready :- 1280 *720 Pixel or 720p  resolution tvs are called HD ready TVs, usually found in tvs below 32 inches in sizes

Full HD :-      1920*1080 Pixel or 1080p resolution tvs are called Full HD Tvs, usually found in tvs above 32 inches till 60 inches , but ideal size for full hd television is just 50 inch , going beyond this size result in pixelated picture output

Ultra HD:-      3840 *2160 Pixel or 2160p resolution tvs  are called Ultra HD tv , ideally looks good above 43 inch tvs only , however 55 inch TVs are best fits for  Indian houses . As most of the set top boxes and current ecosystem support only Full HD network array and upscaling beyond  55 inch size doesn’t provide great results, unless you are going for Tier 1 TVs , which usually equipped with a superb upscaler . High Dynamic Range (HDR)

HDR :- HDR  is High Dynamic Range , is a feature in TVs that increases the contrast , brightness  and colors in such a way increasing details of picture make look like more real or eye pleasing. With HDR small highlights get popped out on screen which result overall great tv viewing experiences. Among many of the backend processes of HDR , it increases the gap between light and dark image, by making light images more brighter and dark image with deep black. Thats where dynamic range word comes into play , HDR technologies are usually served with Wide color Gamut , which is  upto billion colors as compared to 17 million colors of a traditional full hd tv.

But one cannot experience  HDR by regular input , Specific movies and shows are created to make the best use  HDR technologies like Daredevil or The Punisher show on netflix

HDR 10  is an open standard , which is free to use and reflect that tv with HDR10 feature is capable of running all the programming made for HDR experience

Dolby Vision is promoted is enhanced version of HDR10 and companies pay license fees to use this technology , apart from HDR10 we have three optional technologies like HDR10+ , Dolby Vision and Advanced HDR by Technicolor.

What is the difference between HDR10 and Dolby Vision?

Dolby vision is enhanced version of HDR10 , as dolby vision carried “dynamic “ metadata for every scene while HDR10 carries “Static” metadata for whole program or movie.

HDR 10 +,  is something equivalent to Dolby vision ,  and will carry “dynamic” metadata and amazon has provided streaming support in favour of this technology.

Advanced HDR by Technicolor, majorly used in Europe and mostly with LG television set , equally comparable capabilities like HDR10 and Dolby vision

What is HLG

Hybrid log gamma is also an HDR format  and is important for next generations of Over the Air TV Signals which will follow  a standard called ATSC 3.0

Which HDR matters the most?

Any HDR optional technology like HDR10+  or dolby vision is good as long as TV quality is good , by quality we specifically need a minimum 600 nits of brightness to get the best output for HDR video and goes way up to 1000 nits.  So look for Brightness section of TV specification first then look for HDR logo , if these two matched be rest assured you will get the desired experience

*nits is the measure of brightness in TVs , Higher the better.

Panels

VA Panel :- VA means vertically aligned, its better for small and dark rooms, it carries deeper blacks  and hence better contrast but smaller viewing angles

IPS means :- In plane switching , its better for large rooms , has better viewing angles

Refresh Rate

It is number of Frames per second a TV can show , it is measured in Hertz (Hz) . Higher the better.  So a 60 hz refresh rate TV can display 60 frames per second . Theoretically a 120 hertz TV should reduce the motion blur to half .

However much more is dependent on the source , usually the input signal is either 30 fps and 60 fps for uhd recordings, but another points is when something is recorded in 60 Frames Per Second it will look same on a 60Hz  Tv and 120 Hz Tv.

 why a 120 hz tv is better than 60 Hz tv and how?

Usually a movie is Recorded in 24 FPS, and normal internet content is recorded at 30 FPS . So when input is with less frames , These TVs repeats the frames more than one times , which improves the image clarity , as human eye cannot identify much difference , but when a frames is repeated multiple times, it will stay bit longer on the screen hence looks more clear.

Google chromecast does the same thing with every content , it shows content in 60 FPS by default by showing a frame multiple times.

So in case of movies type of inputs a 120 hz tv will show a frame 5 times , but same can not be said for 60 hz tv ,as 24 is not a multiple of 60 . In this case ,these TVs follow 3:2 ratio and sometimes end up in Juddery effect , no matter how negligible it is, but is truth .

So Tier 1 companies use Software algorithms to tackle motion blur hence often expensive too but these companies also lie in terms of actual refresh rate by renaming it to their own terms that misleads for better marketing and gimmicks.

Are Samsung motion rate , Sony Motion Flow XR , Sony X motion Clarity , TCL clear motion , Panasonic BMR( backlight motion rate)  are essentially just half of the number mentioned in reality for example if Samsung motion rate shows 120 it will be 60 hz in reality . So instead of marketing terms check for exact refresh rate and remember numbers can be inflated by marketing.

What is an Aspect Ratio

The proportion of Width and height of frames is called Aspect ratio

However with Ultra HD TV is in place , pixel density has increased , which enable to view it more closely , which makes  viewing distance with 1 isto 1 ratio. Just to provide perspective a 65 inch times can be viewed from a distance 5 and ½ feet away which is approx 66 inch away.

This distance doesn’t mean that you cannot watch it from closely , its just to get the complete experience from the tv you should view from certain distance to see the clear and whole picture in focus.
